swaddling is for newborns

Ok, this is a very disorganized post - but it is an update so hurray! Gosh, there is probably tons more that I could say, but here are the highlights:

Tobo has officially grown out of the swaddlers and most of the newborn wear I bought him during his first 2 weeks. He's just too tall in the torso to do a one piece anymore. So now we have him swimming in 0-3 month stuff. So much has happened. I've had about 8 different journal posts in my head but have not been able to get to the computer before now. Tobo is just a week short of being one month old and he has changed so much. He's a very bright boy. :) Where he use to sleep and sleep, now we get an hour or two a day of awake playful time. One of these hours is actually 10 to 11pm at night. We thought he was just fussy, but last night we just sat up and played with him (followed up by a diaper change and feeding) and he conked out at 11:30p. He had been gulping down food at that time too (about 5 oz in a sitting), but I made more of an effort feeding him during the day yesterday, and that seemed to have sated his need to eat gobs from a bottle at night. We'll try it again tonight and see how it goes.

Paul keeps threatening to go back to work, but really I think he's planning on taking advantage of daddy time as much as possible before he has to go back. I am all for this. I am still too much of a chicken to drive Tobo around in the car by myself, but we are making our first attempt to get out today as a family to church. Moving as a family unit takes a lot more time in the morning than just the two of us. This will be our third attempt to get out to church.

I am getting use to not being pregnant anymore. I'm still not use to being a mom. Every so often I look over at Tobo and say, where did he come from? Surely we found him in a cabbage field or he was brought by the stork. I am happy to be able to have multiple cups of coffee again (though not over 5 a day). I am amazed how long it takes to read any more because my time is full during the day feeding and changing. I've just about given up watching dvd's. Last night Paul and I watched some Dr. Who and it felt weird. This was something we did before baby. Tobo didn't care, he was sacked out between us on the couch. I keep trying to get a walk in each day (even just down to the mail box and back) but I really need to focus on getting more in. My abdomen won't strengthen itself. I've found I feel just fine until I lay on my back and try to turn over. That's when I feel why it takes weeks to get back to "normal".

Funny post-pregnancy dream: The other night I woke Paul up in the middle of the night asking if he had the baby. I was digging around in the blankets between us looking for him. Paul says, "yeah, he's in the bassinet (next to our bed)" I woke up enough at that point to realize Tobo wasn't in bed with us. Since then I've gotten a little more sleep. We're getting 8 hours, but usually in 2 hour increments, spread over 14 hours.

Nana (my mom) just left after a week-long visit. It was great to have her here. I even got to take her out to lunch for her birthday to the local airport. The restaurant is the same one that caters to the private jets that use this airport. The food was really good and you get a nice view of the rockies without having to go up to the rockies.

Tobo got a floor gym, which he seemed to enjoy once he figured out it was in front of him. I tried to take a movie but he is just like his mother in that when you take his picture he a) stops what he's doing and pays attention to you and/or b) closes his eyes. He was very cute though.

He also got his first chance at tummy time and didn't hate it. :) I only got a little weepy at the end of the visit. I totally blame the hormones. :) Happily, Nana will try to visit again soon to keep any eye on Tobo. Grandma and Grandpa (Paul's folks) will be here this week, so tobo will get a lot of grandparent kisses for his 1 month old birthday.

In other news, we've burned through almost all our disposable diapers, so I've got to make a decision about cloth ones. My current stumbling block is washing instructions. I believe I've found some online, so I might start experimenting with the baby with what we have, while I try to decide which ones I like best. I believe wmw pointed out that sunshine diapers has a rental option specifically designed for newborns, which is 90 days of cloth diapers, to be returned for store credit. The catch I guess would be that when we were ready to buy our own, we would need to buy from them. That's not the worse catch in the world, I just don't want it to over lap with what we already have. We currently have 5 or so AIO options (all in one) and a lot of prefolds in two sizes thanks to ellie and wmw. So the question is, how cute are kissaluvs and are they cute enough to justify spending money on them. I'm thinking pretty cute. I need to get my feet wet (hopefully not literally) with what I have I think.

And then there was the dum....

I don't even know what to think about this thing. I took this picture after nursing Tobo for hours. To have him so happy with the pacifier just kind of made something in my brain go "ping". I am not against using them, but I wasn't expecting to have any kind of emotional reaction to them either. After I sat down and thought about it, I realized that I just don't want to depend on the dum. Put it in my parenting bag of tricks, but don't pop it in his mouth so I can talk on the phone, or do the checking, or etc.

Anyway, as always, new photos are posted to: http://picasaweb.google.com/choemke/CuteThingsMyBabyDoes322081015AM

rock-a-bye

Tonight was a weird night. Sam ate for 4 hours (yep, 4 hours of on off breast-feeding, one of many sessions we had today) then eventually took 1 oz of formula because he was just too tuckered to eat anything else, but still wailing that he was hungry. That was at 9:30 pm. He then yelled whenever I put him down on his back, so we've just been reading LiveJournal and rocking for the last hour and 15 minutes. I can hear him over the monitor in the bedroom and I have no idea if he's going to stay down or not.

[returns from bedroom]

In fact, he did get fussy. The good news is he has no fever, so whatever is bothering him, it's not an infection. I'm predicting this will be a very funky night. In other news, his cord popped off today, so he's officially ours. :D

If you can believe it, Paul's in his second week of staying home. That means he will be back in the office a bit next week, and then back full time by the second week of April. The time has flown. I'm planning on taking my 6 weeks off seriously and not work until May 1st or so. With that being said, I'm feeling pretty good -- well enough to do too much usually. I have had a few nights where I'm just a soppy mess by 9pm. I was surprised to find that I'm now two lbs under the original weigh-in I had at the doctor's office when I first thought I was pregnant. Pretty impressive water retention going on there. My ankles haven't looked this normal in quite some time. I still have a lot to lose, but can't really do to much with diet until after my 6 weeks are up. Exercise is a completely different topic. I just have to build up to it.

We got a few visitors today, one of which came bearing dinner. We also got a number of gifts in the mail today (thanks Grandma, Nana and Chesh!) My mom will be in this weekend, so let the grandparent-adoring begin! :) In the meantime, here are more adorable pictures of our kid:

it's a baby!

We greeted tobo (alias Samuel Stephen) into the world 3/15/08 at 12:36 am. Paul has already sent around the details but I thought I'd also say I'm doing ok as is Sam. I'm still processing the whole experience really, but we didn't have any major complications, I mean, other than becoming parents overnight. :)

We actually are going home today (my birthday) instead of waiting for tomorrow morning. We hear there is a snow storm that is on the way tonight and we just don't have a premie snow suit. Sam is a preemie (37 and change weeks) so we are on a 3 hour feeding schedule and had to watch his temperature over the last few days. He's come through with flying colors. He is really a very good boy and we're just having a blast cooing over him and listening to his little lamb like cry. Paul has been a spectacular dad and though I did the night feedings last night, he has been fabulous the rest of the time. He has magic daddy hands that can get Sam to burp instantly.

Anyway, we've decide to blow this pop stand so we will talk to you all next from home.

[We promise to post pictures soon.]
