so tobo learn that his throat and nose are connected yesterday. I never knew that babies could squirt milk from their nose. We suggested that he not do that again since it hurts. We are getting to a slow start this week. We didn't make it to church yesterday, but I did get a few hours in on the annual report, which is due on tuesday. Tobo was content to sleep in the swing for those hours. He seems to be following this pattern:
12mid - last feeding/change
4/5a - diaper crisis! a bit hungry
6a - back to sleep
8a -diaper crisis! Ready for breakfast
9a - first nap
10/11/12 - wake up confused and possibly hungry. Where's my mom?!
12noon - time to eat a serious meal
1/2 - second nap
3p - air time if we haven't had any yet today, mid day snack
4/5p - dad, that awsome guy, is home and plays with me! Who needs mom!
6p - diaper crisis! serious eating. no one has fed me for days.
7p - did I mention I'm still hungry?
8/9p -mom and dad make the first attempt to get me to go to sleep oh and, diaper crisis!
12mid - diaper crisis! and I'm a wee bit peckish
Last night didn't follow any of this pattern. It didn't because I tried baby powder on his back side during the day. Just so you know baby powder = friction in this dry climate. We highly suggest not using it. We spent most of the evening fussing, then I went and stretched out on the couch and let him sleep on me from 12midnight to 2am. This is when I woke up and found I was still on the couch. The rest of the evening was a dance of me putting him down, him fussing and crying, me picking him up changing him and trying to feed him and rock him. Blah. Of course, today was the big communications meeting brain dump of the head designer at ACME, which I really needed to be present for. So at 6:30a I gave up getting back to sleep and just got up and put on the coffee. Really it wasn't a bad day. Tobo was back to being the perfect baby. I stopped with the powder after 3a but not in time for him to get a new red bottom. *sigh* [This is looking much better this evening. We're still going to the doctor tomorrow morning.] He hung out with Paul at work while I was in the meeting, then we all went home for lunch. Got to love an IT guy who comes around to talk to you about your computer with his baby in his arms. :) Though its not a long term solution, it's really fun while he's this small.

he's on a roll
So Tobo's rear is doing better...but this is only after another doctor's visit on Sat to say what you gave us before isn't working. We've now got a second medication which does seem to be making headway, but we also have to get his butt "air time" as much as possible. Honestly I don't know if its the air time or the meds that are making a difference. He's still unbelievably cute though.
Tobo getting some air time:
So today after an hour and a half of sitting on the couch I had some brilliant mommy-logic: "he can't fall if he's on the floor!" I carefully moved Tobo and his pillow to the floor and was delighted to be able to stand and stretch without having to have a hand on him. Eventually I got ambitous and checked me email. No sooner do I turn around but I hear a wump. I turn around and find Tobo spread eagle looking at me with a confused look. He rolled off the pillow! After the initial surprise he did give a bit of a cry, but I think he was more startle than anything else... but we won't be trying that again until he has better neck control.
I have a confession to make. Though I have toted how awesome moby wraps are until today I didn't know how to wear mine properly. Tobo and I went out to my local healthy-breasts store and got a quick tutorial. Now we're rocking the house:

We checked email. We went to get the mail. We went up to get a package from the office. We walked around the complex. We greeted dad at the door. I got to say -- love being hands free.
Other than that, we are getting in the grove. This is our second week at home together, so we're learning all the lessons from last week. Basically feed tobo early and often. It doesn't mean he will sleep through the night (not with that diaper rash) but it does mean that he eats for shorter time periods and is not stressed about them. I think my stress level was going up on the nights where he's freaking out because he's starving. At this point I'm happy to just have one 2 hour walk-about (read:diaper change/nurse/rock/put down/diaper change/rock/put down again/shush for 5 minutes) last night instead of 3 of them. (Saturday night) Unfortunately since I was up from 12am to 5:30am Sunday morning, we didn't get to church. I've got a pile of dishes to return to folks - I've even written the thank you notes for them. Ah well. Next week. Another axiom: if tobo isn't in bed by 9pm plan on staying up to 12am. The kid has a wake up time between there which means that he's bright eyed and bush tailed if you miss that 9pm window. What can I say, I guess he's a bit of a night owl.
I've also been surprised by a) how much I know about taking care of babies and b)how much this is "serving to my backhand" ie I am adequate at what I'm doing, but I'm not super mom. I find myself taking care of things in between tobo-caring instead of reaching out and talking to people. I hope to switch some of that focus in the next weeks, find a medium, but at least I've noticed I'm doing it. An example is we always have clean laundry these days. I run laundry pretty much every morning because it makes me feel like I'm accomplishing something. Tobo is none the worst for it, but you all aren't getting any response from me. I am working my way through old emails now, so I've probably seen your comment, just haven't gotten around to commenting on it myself.
Anyway, off to do some grocery shopping now that dad's home. Talk to you all soon.

check up
Tonight is fussy baby night. I'm not sure exactly why, but he is not winding down for either of us. So I thought I'd write while Paul is taking a turn.
We have been lucky enough to have my mom staying with us this week. She was lucky because Sam had his 2 week check up today and she got to go. He has chunked up a bit and is a little longer than he was to begin with:
Ht: 20.5" (49%)
Wt:6lb 11 oz (8%)
He's chunked up right well, so the doc is good with us going to demand feeding now instead of schedule. (hurray!) Though it means I am likely to be up a lot more and paul will be able to just do emergency diapering at night, I'm taking my chances that Sam's going to give us closer to 4 or 5 hours of sleep at night instead of 2 to 3 hours blocks. The other nice thing about waiting between feedings is he's actually hungry when I get ready to feed him. So we can feed and then get on to diaper changing, instead of mucking about essentially playing with his food. It makes breast feeding a) make more sense and b) become less of a hassle. It's not a perfect system, but it is a vast improvement over scheduled breast night feeding. :( We also found out that apparently he has teeth coming. You read that right. Apparently Sam has natal teeth, which means his baby teeth are already coming in. Which explains a lot, including why I'm getting sore. We'll see how long we can breast feed before he starts biting.
My thank you list is a mile long, so hopefully in the next couple of days I'll get to writing some of those finally. We have one more day of meals from folks, and then we'll be on our own. We have been so thankful for the meals. We would seriously have starved without them. i've also found that caring for a baby is actually like the ultimate civ/catan game. It is the same kind of nurture and build need that I have in both of these games. :)
